Microsoft’s President recently opened up about AI while referring to a blast from the past. In 1949, English essayist George Orwell wrote a book named ‘1984’.

In ‘1984’, Orwell wrote about a dystopian society that was under the surveillance of governments 24/7. He believed that totalitarian surveillance would become a part of life by 1984.

Luckily, it didn’t. However, according to the executives of tech giants, if we do not act carefully, the day is not far when AI would be used to control humans.

This idea came under the spotlight when Microsoft’s President Brad Smith talked to BBC Panorama about the ‘technological advancements and Artificial Intelligence’.

He thinks that it will be “difficult to catch up” with the rapid advancements in the field of AI. Referring to China’s use of AI to monitor people, he further added, “If we don’t enact the laws that will protect the public in the future, we are going to find the technology racing ahead.”

This is where he talked about George Orwell’s ‘1984’ and then said, “I am constantly reminded of George Orwell’s lessons in his book 1984. You know the fundamental story. It was about a government that could see everything that everyone did and hear everything that everyone said all the time. Well, that didn’t come to pass in 1984, but if we’re not careful that could come to pass in 2024.”

China’s road to AI control

China has actually started using AI to control people. They have the vision to rule the world in AI by 2030. As for now, they are on the track.

  • In 2019, China beats the US in a number of aspects in AI academics.
  • There are 770 million surveillance cameras in the world and 54 percent of them are in China. INTERESTING.

USA’s TAKES OVER AI

The USA knows how scary it would be to live in a world that is controlled by China through AI. They have also been found indulged in contracts with Google to use their facial recognition system in their drones and other military projects.

Numerous US companies’ executives have agreed that there is a potential for conflict over the right to use AI to control humans soon. The situation can be avoided if both the countries decide to work hands-in-hands for the welfare of the people.
